(Austin.CityRegions.Com, August 08, 2014 ) Austin, Texas -- Certain varieties of mosquitoes become carriers of these viruses when they bite an infected human, and one such person can then pass the virus on to many mosquitoes which in turn can infect many more individuals, and so on.
The Chikungunya Mosquito Virus has been brought in from the Caribbean and is now also being reported in Michigan. Symptoms usually appear 3 to 7 days after one is bitten by the mosquito, and include joint swelling, muscle pain, fever and headache. There is no cure, and medical professionals can only help alleviate symptoms.
The Jamestown Canyon Virus occurs throughout the United States and generally presents relatively mild flu-like symptoms, but it can also cause encephalitis (swelling of the brain). The chance of contracting this viral infection is at its peak in June and July.
Mosquitoes infected with the West Nile Virus have now also been found in Chester County and Connecticut. The CDC website says that only about 1 in 5 people infected with it will have fever and other symptoms, however a few of those could develop a serious, sometimes fatal, neurologic illness.
Officials at Beaufort County Mosquito Control offices said "mosquitoes are likely to hatch in high numbers next week because of the weather we've been having".
In order to stem the spread of mosquito-borne diseases, the San Joaquin County in California is increasing aerial spraying operations which is directed by tests for the West Nile Virus in mosquitos and birds.
Dr. Theodore Andreadis, director of the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station in New Haven said "It reinforces the message that it's not good to get bitten by a mosquito". Installing an instant magnetic screen door is an effective protection measure.
